Summer vacation is over – Let the education continue
It’s time to settle down, go back to school, and get some work done. Wait a minute! Did I miss something! Vacation! What vacation? I’m a business owner. I don’t get summer vacations, spring breaks, or even much time off over the holidays. I’m lucky if I can take one extra Monday to honor a dead president.
Please don’t get me wrong, going back to school is a very important part of childhood and we couldn’t function as a society without knowing how to read, write, and use a computer, but I’m happy that I no longer have to take tests, do homework, and attend boring lectures. However, just because I’m no longer in school doesn’t, mean I should stop learning.
The more successful we want to become, the more we need to learn. Going back to school is essential even in the grown up world. For example, everyone is required to pay taxes but the subject is meaningless until you get into the workforce. As soon as you get used to the boring routine of getting out of bed early five days a week, and getting yourself dressed for work, you are then shocked by the size of that tiny first paycheck. You look at it in disbelief at just how much money is being taken out by the government. Suddenly the concept of taxes has a whole new meaning. The problems only get worse as you grow your business or climb the corporate ladder. So learning about taxes is an education you really must pursue, and when it comes to money and finance, a really good teacher is mandatory!
And then there is PE or Physical Education. It doesn’t matter if you were a jock or a geek in your younger back to school days, because the lessons they tried to teach in class won’t show up on your body for years to come. But trust me, it will happen. One day you will notice that you are getting older, and you will wish that you had participated more in gym class. So as adults we continue our PE and go to the gym, take yoga classes or go for walks on our lunch break. Plus we actually take wellness seminars and spend hours of time doing online research, all because we need to continue our education. Again, why didn’t we pay attention in health class when we were young! As full grown working adults, there is so much to learn about our own physical bodies, sometimes it feels like we have enrolled in medical school!
Still more to learn
Next there is a little thing called technology. I was at a seminar recently trying to keep up with my adult education when I heard an amazing fact. They said that what you learn in your first year of college will most likely be outdated information by the time you graduate four (or five) years later. Ugh! Will this back to school stuff ever end! Probably not because education really is one of the secrets to success!
Yet no matter how well prepared you think you are – life never goes according to plan. That means you must continue to learn and grow. Adults not only need to go back to school and study, but now they have the added burden of learning from the greatest teacher of them all – life. Almost every day of your grown-up adult existence you are tested over and over again with some kind of educational lesson. Some days you get an A +, other times you fail miserably with an F. And hopefully by now you understand that the grades you receive on that report card of life, are all up to you.
